I GOT MY DREAM JOB!!!

Today, I went in to interview for a position at Disguise Inc... the worlds leading costume design and distribution company! Well, I was hired within an hour of my interview! I'll be starting next week, as the assistant to the sourcing coordinator! I'm soooo excited!!!!

Dusting myself off from the Playa...

WoW. What an epic burn. This years Burningman was by far, THE. BEST. BURN. EVER. I got to take David to his first burn, which was amazing, but it was so much more than that... the people we camped with were amazing, the art we found was mind blowing, and the live music that our camp produced every night was breathtaking! Everyone in camp has come to know and love my wonderful top hat, BOB... "don't go home without it" is my motto with him! I never wander around the playa without him adorning my head :) Watching the temple burn was ridiculous! Biggest temple burn EVER! I made so many amazing friends, and I was totally inspired for our wedding! I knew I would find something out there that would kick the inspiration into full gear, and boy did I ever! There was an art piece called "Wet Dreams" way out on the playa somewhere... It was an installation that Was a giant gazebo, with about 200 white parasol umbrellas, hanging at different heights from the top, all over, in and around it... they added running white lights dangling throughout, and created this amazing piece of art that made your mind wander to a place it had never been before! (The pic above is the best one I have from one of our adventures into it!) So, we have decided that at our wedding, we will have about 200 white umbrellas, hanging in the trees in front of the Victorian mansion we're getting married at :) All at different heights, and with the running xmas lights throughout... its going to be beautiful!

So... I'm still cleaning the dust off, still wrapping my head back around reality... but once again, the playa dust has infected me with love, inspiration, power and drive... thank you Burningman. You always remind me what's real.

I wore one of my shirts to Mexico a few weeks ago for a yoga/surf retreat, and a lot of the girls said they would buy the shirt if I made more...so I'm 4 shirts in, hoping to get 10 up on my store by the end of the week... I've been thinking a lot about where I hope to work, what I hope to be doing, and how I hope to be doing it, in regards to my career when I get back to California. (Which, btw, I miss...a lot.) We are supposed to be moving in just over 2 months... well, that's not happening anymore, since we're in the middle of a court battle with my fiance's ex over the kids... blah. Makes me appreciate where I come from, that's for sure. Anyway... I've been spending time paruzing craigslist, just day dreaming about the beach, and getting the hell out of Colorado... Very randomly, about a week ago, David got an email from his cousin. Well, apparently, she just moved from San Diego, and has a crazy amount of contacts in the fashion world down there, because of what she does for a living. (which i have no idea what that is) She told David all about all these different designers, shops, etc, that she could hook me up with! I can't believe it... I've never even met her!!! So, I'm going to follow up with her in regards to it, but since we don't know when we're actually moving now, I'm just going to have to get the conversation going... and then go from there... Pretty cool, how the world sends you what you're asking for sometimes...

Hello web world!

So, with the whine down of Phantom last fall, I've found myself completely buried in snow! Yes, the Phantom premier was October 8th, and it started snowing October 16th, and hasn't stopped since! Apparently its one of the worst winters on record... at least the snow is epic! We have a pass at A-basin and Keystone, so its been fun to get out as much as possible... although, its so different than skiing in Cali... right now its 10 degrees outside, and that will probably be the high for the day. When we woke up this morning it was -19! Fahrenheit! Insanity! Toooo cold to even go play in the snow! As for my designing... I made some super rad coasters for all my friends and family for Xmas! They are designed to fit onto the bottom of a wine glass, and can be carried around with the glass... they were a hit with everyone! I made almost 100 of them, and gave them to everyone in groups of 4... Ever since that, my studio door has pretty much remained closed, unfortunately. However, with the anticipation of moving to San Diego area in a couple of months, I've decided its time to get the wheels spinning again... My design brain is back on, and I have some pretty awesome ideas!

I'm actually thinking of going more into active wear/street wear when I apply for work in So. Cal... Mainly because I love my costumes, but I really want to broaden my horizons!

So... that's it for now... i'm going to keep this more updated in the near future...

Well, October 8th, 2010...the Phantom of the Opera opened at Kingsbury Hall in Salt Lake City. It was awesome! Almost 1,500 people in attendance, and the show went down great! I've since found out that the show will be traveling to Canada, Maui, and China in the spring! All with my costumes!!! All were designed, constructed and fitted by me =) I'm very proud of myself for this one... This is Kingsbury Hall... the poster for Phantom is on the Right, under the poster for Sinbad...

This is the cast getting ready before the matinee that was put on for kids and seniors...kind of a "dress rehearsal" for the evening show.

it can't be. I'm done with the Phantom of the opera? I don't believe it. I sent my last piece to L.A. today... I loved it...I hope they like it :)

I got a call from the director 2 days ago: "Wow...wow...wow...you went above and beyond what i could have ever hoped for." It feels so good to be doing what I love...and becoming more successful because of it :)

My boyfriend has 2 girls; 6 an 9... I've been telling them the magic: girls, find what you LOVE to do... what you could do every single day, and never get sick of it, and find a way to do it all your life, and make money at it... and you will never work, a day in your life.... you'll just be given money for doing something you love to do... the younger one seems to be getting it... the older one is way more cynical and skeptical...I suppose I was the same at 9 years old.

So, today I'm starting to do more research on each character... The 3 main characters are The Phantom, Christine Daae' and Raoul. Raoul is Christine's childhood sweetheart, while Christine is a member of the choir at the Opera, and lacks focus until the Phantom takes her under his wing and teaches her to sing. She becomes hypnotized by the Phantom, in a sense...

Right now I'm going to start with the Phantom... so, he wears a mask, right? I'm going to use steam punk style goggles as his mask... the question now is, which pair do I like? Here are my options:

I'm getting there...my new studio is about 1/2 way done...The door is perfect =) I still need more table space and some book shelves... and a chair for my sewing station... garage sales, here I come! It feels good to get it part way done....

I do really well with deadlines. Except, self imposed ones! I got a call from the director of POTO (from now on this is how I'll refer to Phantom of the Opera...) I would be proper and just abbreviate all the words, except "the", but that would mean I'd be typing a lot of POO. Nope, don't think that would fly... Funny sidenote: I got my 10 month old niece Isla a "onesie" as we call them... Pretty funny, huh?

Anyway...wow, A.D.D. in full effect!!! Deadlines, that's right... so, i told the director I'd have my concept sketches done by today... I should have been totally honest with myself, and realized that I wanted to spend my weekend with David... he works all week, and its the 2 days that we get to really be together... I'm not gonna want to work! AND, i haven't had time to set up my studio yet... i have a really hard time getting work done when my "space" isn't up to par. So, today, I'm going to sit on the deck and draw concept ideas all day... in hopes that I can create at least 10 that I'm "ok" with... these are just the initial sketches, so its not about perfection, more about ideas... but I'm having a hard time putting my head where it needs to be...obviously!

OK, so I'm on the path to October 8th, 2010. What is that? Its opening night of Phantom of the Opera in Salt Lake City... who's the HEAD COSTUME DESIGNER? That would be ME :) Where does one start when taking on this task? The Theme board. The theme for this production is "Steampunk Victorian". I couldn't ask for a cooler first career job! This really is me in a nutshell... which is why I got a call to be the designer, rather than going out to look for it! My friend Trance is the Director, and he knew it was exactly the kind of designing I do, so he wanted me to be the one in charge of the look :) I'm very excited... so, here is the themeboard that will inspire the costumes for the production...

These are pics of the shirt I made on Friday... took me about an hour to throw it together... I'm super happy with how it came out, and had lots of compliments on it while we were out and about.... Its a Rayon/Spandex blend jersey, so its suuuuuper comfy and soft :) One of my favorite fabrics to work with!

The hat job was cool. She seemed really into me, and my designs...but she said the position was to start June 1st. I just can't do that. I want to move July 1st to San Diego... SO.... onto the next thing. What's that? Hula Hoops. Well, Hooptastic actually. I had a long talk with my friend Sarah tonight, and my mom, and I'm going to go forward with my hula hoop biz idea. The plan is to start small... make 30 or so hoops, and have a booth at the local farmers market. If I sell even 3 hoops, it will pay for the market, but I'm pretty sure I can sell a lot more than that! My hoops are amazing, because they're professional grade, and they are collapsible! They fold into two small hoops! People LOVE them! So, Sarah and I are going in on it together... and the idea is to start with the hoops, and eventually create a line of hoop clothes to go with it. Sarah's also a fashion designer, graduating in June, so we'd be perfect together! She's a great biz woman too... was a manager at a high end boutique in Melbourne, Australia before she moved to SF... So, tomorrow, I'm on a mission to find the piping we need, and find it locally. I tried once before, and its near impossible! Not a single irrigation or plumbing supply company in Marin carries it, but it is out there! I've found it online... so that's the next step. Hooptastic, here I come!

OK, so I'm actually considering this: Relocating to Southern Cali... there are so many more job opportunities, and its time for some serious change... San Diego is where I'm looking. I have a few friends that live down there, one that is the head shoe designer for REEF. So, will I move? I think so... but I need to get all my ducks in a row before i do that. i.e. interviews, places to stay while checking it out, place to live once I'm down there... and most important; having a job when i get there. I want to have something lined up before I leave. So, I sent out my first resume to a job in downtown S.D. today... to be a handbag designer for a new up and coming company. The job even says you can work from home... which I suppose i could do here, but I want to be somewhere different. I want change. I'm ready for new.

I officially finished today. But, as my mom put it... no, you officially started today. Yes, I'm officially going to be in the world looking to start my career... starting with tomorrow.

Plan for tomorrow? Call the designer from Teatro Zinzanni. It's an amazing dinner circus that's in San Fran.

If I could choose anywhere to work, that is it. I want to design Circus costumes... And she gave me her phone number today, to meet over a cup of coffee :) I'm ubber excited! So, that's on the list for tomorrow....

Ok, so today (after I go to sleep, and wake up in the morning!) will be the last day of my life, that I walk into FIDM as a student. I will be an Alumni starting on Tuesday :) I can't believe it! Now, I just have to find myself a job....hmmm.... wonder how that's gonna happen... I'm online everyday seeing what's out there! I've create this space because my wonderful friend Lilli recommended it, and well, I thought it was a great idea.

I'm going to keep all the jobs I apply for, the ones I interview for, and well, the one I get, on this fabulous little piece of cyber space! Then it's gonna be all about that job, and how its treating me =)
